When a powerflush is worth paying for, and when it is not

Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read · From our Gas Safe heating engineers

A powerflush is a genuinely useful job on the right system and a waste of your money on the wrong one. Here is how a heating engineer should decide which yours is.

Signs that say flush

  • Several radiators cold along the bottom and warm at the top. That is sludge sitting in them.
  • Black water when you bleed a radiator.
  • A boiler that bangs or kettles. Sludge and scale on the heat exchanger make the water boil in patches, and left alone it shortens the boiler’s life.
  • A new boiler going onto an old, dirty system. A new heat exchanger on sludgy water is asking for trouble.

When black water and a banging boiler turn up together, the system is dirty enough to be doing damage, and that is where a powerflush is genuinely the right call.

Signs that do not

  • Cold at the top only. That is air. Bleed it.
  • Far rooms cold, near rooms fine. That is balancing, not dirt.
  • One radiator cold at the bottom. That single radiator can often be taken off and flushed on its own, which is a much smaller job.

What a proper powerflush involves

A pump is connected to the system and water is driven round at high flow with cleaning chemicals, radiator by radiator, to lift the sludge and carry it out. It is a machine and the right chemicals, not a quick drain and refill.

What has to happen afterwards

The flush gets the sludge out. A magnetic filter stops it building straight back up. The filter catches the magnetite as it circulates, and it gets cleaned out at each annual service. That is why a filter goes on every boiler we fit. A powerflush without a filter is half a job.

Price

We price a powerflush before we start, once we know how many radiators there are and how the system is set up. If you are not sure whether you need one, describe what the radiators are doing and we will tell you honestly, including when the answer is no.
