How it works
Warm again in three steps
- 1
Tell us the symptom
Cold radiators, no hot water, the pressure gauge, a fault code. Half the diagnosis happens on the phone, and it decides which part comes with us.
- 2
Fault found, price given
The actual fault found and shown to you, then priced before any work. You know what the visit costs before we set off.
- 3
Fixed and tested
Combustion checked and the heating left running properly, with a 1 year warranty on the work.

What is your central heating doing?
Pick the closest match. Some you can fix yourself in five minutes; the rest, a heating engineer near you should look at.
Most likely
Air
Air collects at the top of a radiator. It just needs bleeding, which you can do yourself: heating off, radiator key on the valve at the top corner, open it slowly until water appears, close it, then check the boiler pressure.
If the same radiator needs bleeding again and again, air is getting in somewhere, and that is worth us looking at.

Sludge
Sludge sinks. A cold band along the bottom means debris lying in the radiator and blocking the flow. Bleeding will not touch it.
One radiator can often be taken off and flushed. Several doing it means the system needs a powerflush and a magnetic filter so it does not come straight back.

Balancing
Nothing is broken. Water takes the easiest path, so the radiators nearest the boiler take more than their share. Balancing means adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so the flow is shared out.
It is fiddly and takes a couple of hours across a whole house, but it costs nothing in parts and is usually the difference between a cold back bedroom and a warm one.

Leak or expansion vessel
One top up a year is nothing to worry about. Weekly means a leak on the system or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping it up is treating the symptom.
Note the date every time you top up. The rate of loss is the most useful thing you can tell us on the phone, and we find which of the two it is before quoting.
Book a heating engineerMost likely
Diverter valve
Usually the diverter valve, the part that decides whether heat goes to the taps or the radiators. When it sticks you get one but not the other.
A common repair, not a new boiler. Diagnosed on site, priced before any work is done.
Book a heating engineerMost likely
Limescale or sludge
Scale or sludge on the heat exchanger, so the water is boiling in patches. Black water out of a bleed valve plus a boiler that bangs means the system is dirty enough to be shortening the boiler's life.
Worth acting on. That is the case where a powerflush genuinely is the right answer.
Book a heating engineerMost likely
Frozen condensate pipe
A frozen condensate pipe is the classic January call. The boiler locks out because the waste pipe outside has frozen solid.
Often fixable in minutes, and we will talk you through it on the phone before charging you for a visit.

A boiler breakdown and installation of a gas hob and he is no ordinary plumber, when he says he'll be there he is, and his prices are good, which can be unusual these days. Workmanship and attention to detail spot on. Would recommend him without question.

This is a company that is highly recommended in any aspect of a gas boiler, whether it be a repair, service or a replacement. The service that's offered is one of the best I have come across. Nothing is too much trouble. Very honest and trustworthy. Five stars all day long.

Advice
Before you book a heating engineer
- Cold radiators: how a heating engineer tells bleed, balance and flush apart Where a radiator is cold tells you the fix. Cold at the top, cold at the bottom, or whole rooms never warm: three symptoms, three different jobs, and only one of them needs a powerflush.
- Boiler pressure keeps dropping: how often is too often? Topping up once or twice a year is normal. Weekly is a fault. How to read your pressure gauge, the two usual causes, and why topping up every week costs more than the repair.
- Radiators hot, taps cold: why a combi stops making hot water When a combi boiler heats the radiators but not the taps, the fault is usually one part: the diverter valve. What it does, what to check first, and why it is a repair, not a new boiler.
Questions
Heating engineer near me: your questions
What does a heating engineer near me actually do?
Everything on the heating side: boiler repairs and servicing, radiators and valves, powerflushing, balancing, pressure problems, new boilers, underfloor heating and cylinders. As Gas Safe registered engineers we also work on the gas side of the boiler, which a plumber alone cannot.
Is a heating engineer the same as a central heating engineer?
Yes, people use both. Either way you want someone Gas Safe registered if the system has a gas boiler, because the boiler itself is gas work.
Where do you cover?
Bridgend county first, from our base in Pencoed at junction 35. Then the Vale (Cowbridge, Llantwit Major, Pontyclun), Port Talbot and Neath, for all heating work.
What do you charge?
An annual boiler service is £84 and new boilers are fitted from £1,900 with VAT. Repairs and other heating work are priced before we start, and you know what a visit costs before we set off.
How quickly can you come out?
In Bridgend county we can usually be with you the same day. Elsewhere, send us the symptom and your postcode and we will give you a real time.
Do I need a powerflush?
Only if the system is dirty: radiators cold along the bottom, black water when you bleed them, or a boiler that bangs. Cold at the top is air and just needs bleeding.
Do you work on LPG and oil heating?
Yes to LPG: installs, servicing and repairs. We are now registered to work on oil boilers too, and oil jobs always start with a site visit.
Is your work guaranteed?
Every job comes with a 1 year warranty as standard, and we are fully insured.
