Repair or replace? Straight answers on older boilers in Maesteg
Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read · From our Gas Safe heating engineers
When an older boiler breaks down, the first question is never really “what is wrong with it?”. It is “is it worth fixing?”. A good heating engineer should answer that honestly, with both numbers in front of you, not just sell you whichever is easier for them.
How we approach it
On a repair visit, the fault is found and shown to you first. Then you get the repair price. If the boiler is getting on, you also get a fixed replacement price at the same time, so you can compare like for like. If the boiler is not worth the money, you get told.
What pushes the answer towards repair
- The fault is a single, common part, such as a diverter valve or a fan.
- The boiler has been serviced every year and the rest of it is in good order.
- Parts for the model are still easy to get.
- The system is clean, with no sludge or banging.
What pushes it towards replacement
- Age. A boiler on a well-fitted, serviced system generally lasts twelve to fifteen years. Past that, another repair often just buys time until the next one.
- Repeat faults. Second and third callouts in a winter add up quickly.
- Parts that are hard to get. Waiting a week for an obsolete part in January is not a repair, it is a cold house.
- A big repair quote on a boiler that is already old.
- An old non-condensing boiler. A new A-rated boiler uses less gas than an old non-condensing one.
Maesteg and back boilers
If your Maesteg or Caerau home still has a back boiler behind the fire, it is worth knowing that replacing it is a bigger job than a straight swap. It means taking out the fire and back boiler, fitting a combi somewhere with a good flue route, and usually taking out the cylinder and loft tanks too. It is priced separately, before you book, so you can weigh it against keeping the old one going.
The numbers we can publish
An annual service is £84, and keeping it up is the best way to stretch a boiler’s life. New boilers are fitted from £1,900 with VAT, with the flush, filter and paperwork included. Repairs are priced once the fault is known.
We cover Maesteg town, Caerau, Nantyffyllon, Garth, Cwmfelin and Llangynwyd from our base in Pencoed.

- Cold radiators: how a heating engineer tells bleed, balance and flush apart Where a radiator is cold tells you the fix. Cold at the top, cold at the bottom, or whole rooms never warm: three symptoms, three different jobs, and only one of them needs a powerflush.
- Boiler pressure keeps dropping: how often is too often? Topping up once or twice a year is normal. Weekly is a fault. How to read your pressure gauge, the two usual causes, and why topping up every week costs more than the repair.
- Radiators hot, taps cold: why a combi stops making hot water When a combi boiler heats the radiators but not the taps, the fault is usually one part: the diverter valve. What it does, what to check first, and why it is a repair, not a new boiler.
