Off-grid heating in the Vale: oil and LPG near Llantwit Major and Cowbridge
Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read · From our Gas Safe heating engineers
Not every home in the Vale is on mains gas. If yours runs on an LPG tank, bottles or an oil boiler, a search for a heating engineer near me needs one more filter: can they legally work on your fuel?
LPG needs its own ticket
Working on gas from a tank or a bottle is not covered just by being on the Gas Safe Register for mains gas. The engineer needs LPG on their registration too, and you can see it listed on the back of their ID card. Ask to look.
On LPG heating we:
- Fit new boilers for LPG, combi or system, matched to the house and to what the tank or bottles can supply
- Service them every year, reading the combustion against LPG values rather than mains ones, and looking at the supply side as well as the boiler
- Fix breakdowns, including the ones that turn out to be a supply problem rather than a boiler problem
- Do landlord gas safety checks on let homes that run on LPG
- Check LPG cookers and fires while we are there
Oil
We are now registered to work on oil boilers. Every oil job starts with a site visit, so we can see the tank, the boiler and the flue before anything is priced. Send us a couple of photos and your postcode and we will book it in.
Where we cover in the Vale
Llantwit Major on the coast, Cowbridge and the villages around it (Llanblethian, Aberthin, Ystradowen), and across to Pontyclun. There is no travel charge in the Vale: the price we give you is the price. If your village is not named, send your postcode and we will tell you straight away.
The heating side is the same
Off-grid or not, radiators still go cold at the bottom, systems still lose pressure and far rooms still need balancing. Everything on the heating side we do on a mains gas home, we do on yours.
Getting a price
Tell us the fuel (tank, bottles or oil), the make of boiler if you know it, what is going on, and your postcode. LPG and oil work is priced before we start, and if something is not worth doing, you get told rather than sold it.

- Cold radiators: how a heating engineer tells bleed, balance and flush apart Where a radiator is cold tells you the fix. Cold at the top, cold at the bottom, or whole rooms never warm: three symptoms, three different jobs, and only one of them needs a powerflush.
- Boiler pressure keeps dropping: how often is too often? Topping up once or twice a year is normal. Weekly is a fault. How to read your pressure gauge, the two usual causes, and why topping up every week costs more than the repair.
- Radiators hot, taps cold: why a combi stops making hot water When a combi boiler heats the radiators but not the taps, the fault is usually one part: the diverter valve. What it does, what to check first, and why it is a repair, not a new boiler.
